Images courtesy of Contemporary HUM & Buhino AIR 18 09 presents a solo exhibition of works developed during time on the Bhuino AIR programme in Messejana. Messejana is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Aljustrel, in the district of Beja. The work is site-specific, recalling the architectural character of the township. This collection draws on the Igreja da Sta. Maria (Matriz) (St. Mary Church).

Layers of white fabric symbolise successive coverings applied over time, mirroring the church’s ongoing restoration, where underlying surfaces are gradually revealed through collective care and contribution. This process extends to the wider architectural and social fabric of Messejana, including the Igreja da Misericórdia de Messejana, a 16th-century structure shaped through periods of construction and repair.
Historically, institutions of misericórdia functioned as sites of communal support; linking religious space with systems of labour, and shared responsibility. Within this context, restoration is not fixed but continuous, sustained through local participation and maintenance. Through these pieces, the work attends to the quiet, layered histories held within architecture, and what remains beneath the surface.
